International students: rental housing becomes easier in France

September 09, 2014 | By francecanadaculture Ottawa

French Secretary to Higher Education Geneviève Fioraso announced Monday, September 8th a new third-party guarantee system that will allow all students to rent a place more easily, without regard to their means nor to their nationality.

The system, Caution Locative étudiante, called la "CLé" ("the Key"), allows students until the age of 28 to get a guarantee from French State. If ever the tenant does not pay the rent, the landlord is insured to receive a full indemnification. As compensation, beneficiary students will pay contributions equalizing 1,5% of the total renting price.

In fact, private owners as well as estate agencies demand evidences of guarantors' revenues. In most cases, foreigner guarantors are not accepted, regardless of what they may earn.

From now, thanks to the "CLé" system, French State will be able to stand surety for international students, who will not be exluded from estate market anymore.
